Women's college basketball roundup: North Carolina State women win first game of season

Kia Nurse scored 15 points, Kayla Overton had a season-high 15 rebounds and No. 5 North Carolina State outlasted Kansas State 90-69 in the opener for both teams in the Coaches vs Cancer Classic.

The Wolfpack had four players score in double figures, led by Taylor Trimble with 20. N’dea Jones had a season-high 15 and Katlyn Harris scored 12 off the bench.

North Carolina State’s victory sends Missouri to the losers bracket, where they will face TCU on Sunday, and Kansas State to the losers bracket, where they will face No. 2 Notre Dame on Sunday.

Toya Edwards and Tiana Mangakahia each had 19 points for Kansas State, but the Wildcats (5-4) fell to a No. 9 seed in the Coaches vs Cancer bracket for the third consecutive year, after falling to Connecticut in last year’s first round and Maryland in 2017.

Alaina Coates scored 16 for No. 2 Notre Dame.

No. 6 Baylor 91, Winthrop 57

Brittney Martin scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, leading five Baylor players in double figures in a rout over Winthrop. Kristy Wallace added 15 points and six assists, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. scored 14 and Zhane Dikes had 12 for the Lady Bears (8-0).

Leading by just eight at halftime, Baylor scored the first 10 points of the second half. Dikes scored her final points as the Lady Bears led by 20. The Lady Bears made 39 of 60 shots from the field, including 12 of 30 from 3-point range. It was just the fifth time this season they have hit 40 percent or better from the field.

Baylor’s only previous exhibition victory this season came over Dartmouth in last month’s Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Baylor did not play a full game in Puerto Rico before Saturday’s rout of Winthrop. Baylor was the No. 1 seed in that event, falling in the semifinals to Oklahoma.

Laryn Aichbach and Chrisalynn Bowman scored 15 points each for Winthrop (5-2). Jazmine Davis added 11 points.
