Willie Nelson recorded two batches of demos during a “bittersweet” time in the late 1980s and ’90s, his sons Lukas and Micah said, each taking two years to complete.

In the first batch, “We have a lot of songs about his first marriage, like a lot of what’s going on in the country now,” said Lukas Nelson, 31, the youngest.

“But other songs are completely different,” he added. “He has a list of songs he can sing forever, and some of them are on the new album.”

“Forever My Lady,” with more than a dozen songs, includes “Take a Picture,” a duet with Merle Haggard, and a cover of the 1947 ballad “Tell Mama,” with the family on harmonies. But Nelson was just as excited about releasing the album himself, particularly a collaboration with a female artist.

“I always wanted to do that,” Nelson said. “We got one of her friends to sing a harmony part, and it was really cool. Then we added her on the ‘What’s My Name?’ song, and that was a really cool thing. We’re really proud of that.”

The album, which will be available on Tuesday, features Nelson’s sons, as well as two of his sisters, Bobbie Nunez and Carlene Williams.

“We didn’t know each other,” Lukas Nelson said. “We worked out all the parts together.”

Nelson said the album also shows family unity in the making, as well as respect and gratitude for music that’s been given their father’s stamp.

“He’s recorded thousands of songs,” he said. “A lot of them are the best he’s ever done.”
