Superyachts are a roving symbol of wealth and excess, and despite the current economic crisis, developers across the world are still keen to build them. Not only is it at once a sign of the superwealthy, but the design of the superyacht means it is also hugely profitable. “The construction of one of these vessels typically costs seven figures, even when you are only half finished,” explains Wayne Whittle, managing director of Currys, a yacht and superyacht website.

In addition to a plethora of features and a price tag that can easily top a billion dollars, ultra-wealthy clients can acquire the superyacht of their dreams through customized design with bespoke bespoke finishes to suit their individual taste. “These superyachts all have a big issue — either they are wide or they are a bit tall,” says Whittle. “So most of the time, it is about adapting those design features so that people can really control and cater to that sort of client.”

The fleet of superyachts on this list are for the most part the result of private individuals (typically their country of residence), or a powerful sovereign power, often belonging to a political family. They all spend their time cruising through the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Caribbean archipelago, feeding off the resulting blurring of the commonwealth lines. “These are pretty elite customers,” says Whittle. “They tend to have a good percentage of millionaires and billionaires as well as their country of residence or their state of residence.”

Here are the 10 largest superyachts currently available for purchase.
