Emma Sinclair Raducanu beat defending champion and third seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4 7-5 to reach the US Open semi-finals in New York.

Raducanu had lost all three previous meetings against Bencic, but the 21-year-old Romanian pushed the Swiss giant all the way in another tight quarter-final encounter on Sunday.

After a tight opening set, Raducanu raced to a 5-1 lead in the second and looked on her way to a first appearance in a grand slam semi-final.

But Bencic, playing in her first US Open in three years, rallied and clawed her way back to 5-3, only for Raducanu to serve out the match.

“She can serve great and she returns well,” Bencic told TV commentator Bobby Reynolds. “I gave up too many points on her service games and when you play against one of the top-10 players, a few bad points really end up hurting you.”

Raducanu, ranked 67th in the world, plays either Czech fourth seed Karolina Pliskova or fellow Romanian Irina Begu in the last four at Flushing Meadows.
