Mexico earthquake triggers ‘desert tsunami’ 1,500 miles away in Death Valley cave in California

The world learned today of a large, powerful earthquake that rocked the central Philippines after initially being reported to be a small one. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it had a magnitude of 8.9 and an epicenter 65 miles from the town of Marilao in Maguindanao province.

The quake knocked out power in parts of the Philippines capital, Manila, and in neighboring provinces, damaging buildings and killing at least six people. The country’s president, President Rodrigo Duterte, said the quake was “a serious matter.”

The disaster zone was located in the island of Mindanao, which lies between the sea and the mountains of Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi. Mindanao and Sulu islands are connected by a string of land links. The quake was centered in the remote mountainous area of Marilao.

On the ground, authorities reported power outages, with the national power distribution company saying some of its branches were knocked out in a dozen places. Police said they had rescued 21 people from the quake. The president of Mindanao’s Sulu province sent a statement to national television, saying his area was “in the midst of a major disaster.”

Marilao is located on the northern slopes of Mindanao island, which is an island off the main part of Luzon. The island of Mindanao has more than 5,000 volcanoes, the second most in the world after the Hawaiian Islands in terms of total number of volcanoes. Marilao, which is roughly 250 miles east of Manila, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines.

The Marikina City Police chief, Arnell Mabanta, said the quake was felt in the region, but it was not felt “over a broad area,” the Philippine Network Courier reported. Authorities in the area initially believed the quake was a small one, he added, but later confirmed it was a strong one.

The quake brought back memories for local residents of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which occurred in a remote part of the region,
