Ronaldo cites ‘heat of moment’ after left off Manchester United squad
The Portugal goalkeeper has made just four Premier League appearances for United this season and is already on the substitute’s bench ahead of the trip to Arsenal.
But following his own remarks to MUTV, Rooney says the former Manchester City goalkeeper’s decision was taken purely because of the “heat of the moment”.
“He’s a professional, he knows what he’s doing,” said the 30-year-old.
“He knows that he’s been told that I’ve been offered the move to Barcelona and he has to accept so he accepted.
“I don’t know what’s going on around him or what he’s been told by Manchester City – I don’t know what that would be like.
“I just know that a decision was taken that he knew in the heat of the moment was he going to be involved and then he was.”
Rooney was not made available for comment after training on Wednesday night as United prepare to take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday.
And the 31-year-old will not have been in the squad meeting at Carrington on Thursday morning for another day and, as he is due to play in the Capital One Cup on Saturday morning, has been left to answer questions during the break.
But Rooney was eager to give his view on the situation and revealed how he is more concerned about the criticism that has been thrown at him than the criticism that has been shown towards him.
“It’s obviously frustrating to have come away from the game with that being said,” he added.
