Roger Federer is probably not going to play at next year’s Australian Open, according to his coach.

The Swiss great last played in the final of the 2017 Wimbledon on July 16 and said before the tournament that he had decided to retire at the age of 36.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Rogers Cup final in Montreal, Stefano Travaglini, who has been working with Federer since 2015, said the veteran is “definitely feeling a little bit old” but didn’t rule out the possibility of playing a few tournaments this year.

“I think next year we will have to have conversations about his preparation, obviously not that before,” Travaglini told a press conference ahead of the final in Montreal.

“But I am sure when the time comes, we will think of maybe giving him some tournaments, before and after the Australian Open to make sure he is not tired.

“Roger has a plan. He’s done this plan twice, three times already. And I think he will do it again, if he doesn’t take this opportunity to rest a little bit.

“With this plan, he can get to the best of five, and of course the best of three so when he is ready, you know, he can come back better.”

Asked whether he would advise Federer to be cautious, Travaglini said: “I think for Roger it’s just like every normal player, you have the hunger to return to the form where you are playing sometimes a lot of tennis or if you didn’t play much tennis, so you want to have as many matches as possible.

“I’m not sure whether some of the players are affected a little bit more or less than Roger. It’s hard to say. For Roger it’s like every other player — he needs to make the decisions and do what he wants.”
