Kyrgios says he saw smoke after US Open win over Robredo

Nick Kyrgios complains of marijuana smell during US Open second round win

The 25-year-old was the first player off court following the match and then returned to the media area for another statement.

The Australian open in Miami has been played on the same course since 1975 and is considered to be one of the world’s best clay courts.

Kyrgios went on to win the tournament in 2017 and 2018.

The American complained that there was a “huge haze” of smoke surrounding his racket at the back of the court after it was hit by a ball in his second round victory over Tommy Robredo.

“You can tell as soon as the ball hits the court that something bad is going to happen,” Kyrgios said after the match. “There’s a huge haze around my racket. I feel bad,” he added, complaining that he was unable to breathe for a few minutes.

Kyrgios said the smoke was present when his second serve came back out of the net.

“I saw some smoke and there’s no way I’m ever doing that again,” the six-time Grand Slam winner said.

But he said he never saw any smoke at the baseline before and he didn’t smell marijuana either.

Kyrgios later said he did not smell cannabis with Robredo in the locker room before his match but, when they later returned to the media room, both said they had smoked pot with each other.

Kyrgios, who lives in the UK, was originally from Sweden and was born in Miami, Florida.

Earlier, he said that he had experienced “a couple of flashbacks” before his US Open victory.

But he later changed his story to say he was experiencing “a cold sore, a stomach virus and a stomach bug,” which he said he thought was caused by eating too much ice cream at the USTA Championships.

The American went on to win his third major title in 2018 at Flushing Meadows and was the first player from outside the majors to win this title since Roger Federer in 2012.

The 28-year-old Robredo, the world number six and the 2013 Open champion, went on to a straight-sets win over the Spaniard in a first round match on Friday.
