The European Union has ordered all the diplomatic staff of its embassies in Nigeria to leave the country immediately.

According to the EU’s ambassador to Nigeria, the move is meant to stem the growing number of violent attacks on European embassies in Africa and to protect the staff.

“In light of the security situation in Nigeria, which led to a number of serious concerns around security and human rights, the EU has decided to order the departure of all the diplomatic staff of its embassies in Nigeria,” said EU ambassador to Nigeria, Christian Schmidt.

The embassy in Abuja, Schmidt told the news, is “being relocated to the country‚Äôs capital Abuja.”

“The embassy had been operating out of a compound in the Lagos metropolis for the past three years,” he explained, referring to the capital of Nigeria.

On Monday, the Lagos State Government suspended the work of the embassy pending the finalisation of the relocation exercise.

“Lagos State Government has suspended the work of the embassy until the relocation exercise is completed,” said Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The embassy will relocate to the country’s capital Abuja.

He was speaking to journalists, in Abuja. “From today, the embassy will operate out of a commercial and residential area in Lagos’s downtown area,” he said.

The Lagos State Government has suspended the work of the embassy pending the relocation exercise.

“Lagos State Government has suspended the work of embassy until the relocation exercise is completed,” Babaji said.

The Lagos State Government had issued a statement saying it was suspending the work of the embassy “to protect its staff against violence, human rights violations, and to protect the lives of our countrymen.”
