Two men have been arrested in connection with the British police investigation into an incident where knives were thrown on to a plane after a security breach in Manchester.

“Two men aged 28 and 46 were arrested yesterday by detectives investigating a security breach on board a British Airways flight from Manchester to Barcelona,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

“These arrests follow an investigation where knives were found on the plane during a security sweep following the disruption caused.”

Passengers on British Airways flight from Manchester to Barcelona were waiting on Friday to board a plane in Terminal Five when a pair of men taunted staff with cutlery after stowing knives in their luggage, according to reports.

After the incident on Thursday, a BA spokesman told CNN: “The passenger who threw knives on the plane has been banned from all BA services and will be subject to police formal investigation.”

Asked what would happen to the stowaways after the plane landed, he said: “The passengers were not on the plane when the weapons were found and so at this stage it’s unclear how the weapons got onto the plane.”

The arrests were announced in a statement issued on Friday. A police spokesman said the men were detained for “relating to a terrorism-related matter in respect of alleged possession of a weapon” and also “alleged possessing an offensive weapon”.

Police were investigating whether the men were linked to an incident last month when suspected knives were thrown on a passenger plane from Shannon Airport in Ireland, amid security concerns.

Two men were detained after the incident at Shannon Airport in Ireland on August 22.
